re-(t)exHile | Trnava
Artists: Martinka Bobrikova, Oscar de Carmen, and María Alejandra Gatti Curator: Lýdia Pribišová Venue: Synagogue – Centre for Contemporary Art, Galéria Jána Koniarka, Trnava Photography: Andrej Balco
re-(t)exHile enters its first European chapter in Trnava, Slovakia, continuing its long-term investigation into global textile waste, displacement, and sustainability. After its debut at the Lagos Biennale 2024, this iteration reflects on the re-importation of second-hand textiles to the Global North, revealing the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion.
The project expands through a large-scale, evolving installation created in collaboration with local communities, including the School of Design in Bratislava. Textiles collected from Lagos and Slovakia are woven together, symbolizing interconnected cycles of production, waste, and repair.
Through collective sewing workshops, a public swap market, and conversations with artists, curators, and activists, re-(t)exHile fosters dialogue about Europe’s role in the global textile waste crisis. It invites participants to reflect on shared responsibility, sustainability, and the potential for collective action and care.
This exhibition marks a key moment in the project’s European journey—connecting communities across continents and challenging the systems that shape our material and social landscapes.
