The war Russia is waging against Ukraine is facing opposition from artists, producers and researchers, and many have left the country. What kind of strategies do critical artists use in authoritarian and patriarchal societies? This evening we get to hear more of these voices, which give us more depth and more nuances than the monotonous news picture.
The majority of Russia's soldiers are recruited from areas on the outskirts of the country's big cities. Places where weapons are used as toys and religious sculptures are the dominant artistic expression in public space. There is little infrastructure for critical contemporary art here. How is art created in such a vacuum?
